How to Be Remy Cameron Customer Reviews

:
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Mark Painter -- You Can't Judge a Book by Its Cover : I have a confession to make: I totally bought this book because of its cover. ( Reviewed in the United States on April 15, 2020 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Ulysses Grant Dietz -- Smart, complex, funny, poignant, refreshing. Worth it. : Young adult books are a special, delicate sub-set of contemporary fiction. I guess, in theory, anyone who’s ever been a teenager could write one; but not every former teenager can write a good book. Julian Winters seems to have the gift, since “How to be Remy Cameron” is as good as “Running with Lions” was. It presents a dilemma each of us experienced as a teenager—the sometimes overwhelming crisis of identity. This book pulled me back into the angst and panic of my eighteenth year, when I was just grappling with the enormity of being gay in a world where teenagers still didn’t come out. Almost never. • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Melanie Gazazian -- Remy is someone for all the ages! : THIS BOOK WAS SO MUCH FUN. However, there are some serious trigger warnings including discussions of racism, homophobia, past minor characters' death, and alcoholism, as well as depictions of homophobic bullying, and a scene involving brief sexual harassment/racial fetishism (copied straight from the book). BUT I think Winters does a PHENOMENAL job at addressing all of them in a digestible way. ( Reviewed in the United States on July 30, 2020 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from BevS -- Another great read from Julian... : Julian Winters is now one of my auto-buy authors, and The Summer of Everything is already on my radar for later this year. I liked this one even more than Running With Lions, and that one was pretty good. 4.5 stars rounded up from me. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 9, 2020 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from James Johnson -- Sehr zu empfehlen! : An excellent story about taking a moment to look at what makes you who you are. Remy Cameron is lost, adrift on a sea of hormones and questions. He's a teenager of colour, adopted and gay. He's loved and he loves. But which of those facts determines what his true nature is? Whether he deserves happiness and success. A simple essay assignment throws him into unexpected confusion and we are lucky enough to join him on his journey as he sorts through the labels he has made for himself and that others have imposed on him. He questions the role of family, both adopted and blood, of friends, romance, and sexuality. He is naive at times, but who wasn't at 17? Julian Winters provides some but not all of the answers, and refuses to patronize the reader. There's room for you in this story too. ( Reviewed in Germany on October 28, 2019 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from WhatJaneReads -- My 80s music heart danced! : In his AP literature class Remy gets the assignment to write about the question „Who am I?“. ( Reviewed in Germany on June 11, 2020 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Linda S -- Such a special book : This book is one of my highlights of the year for many, many reasons. It's sweet and funny, but at the same time really emotional and discusses a lot of important topics. ( Reviewed in Germany on October 28, 2019 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Brighid Lee -- A beautiful story about finding yourself : I don't think it's an exaggeration to say that Julian Winters is one of the most beautiful writers in the game at the moment. His books are everything you want in a fluffy, gay romantic contemporary but they're also so much more than that. Remy struggles to find his place in the world in this novel in a way that all teens and readers of any age would be able to relate to. Absolutely adored this and recommend everyone gives it a try. How To Be Remy Cameron Quotes By Julian Winters Remy Cameron es un tipo bastante agradable. Remy goes out with his seven-year-old sister and gets mistaken for her babysitter because they're different races, triggering all his adoptive child insecurities that he'll never really be a Cameron. He wants to attend Emory to study creative writing and his teacher, Mrs. Amos, used to be a lecturer there so he also wants to impress her. He's the president of the Gay-Straight Alliance. How to Be Remy Cameron is a well-written, diverse novel that explores the complex topic of identity through the lens of a teenage boy's AP Lit essay. The novel is framed by an essay that Remy's been assigned to write from his AP Lit class, which I thought was super smart and well-done. All in all, How To Be Remy Cameron is a thoughtful, poignant, and fun coming-of-age experience. Other notable characters include Remy's adoptive family and his English teacher, Ms. Amos. Remy's adoptive family is quirky and loving, with the mom into 80s music and the father able to make wicked French toast recipes.
