:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Baton Rouge Toolboy -- A sad but true story of a family so dysfunctional it is hard to accept all the misery : As I read this story, I hurt for the children as their parents made such a dysfunctional mess for them. And yet, with all the pain and misery, Sherry continued struggling for a loving family and a normal life she saw in other families. She fought giving up as she saw all the hurt and selfishness her parents gave her and her siblings. Every effort she made to have a loving family was destroyed. The story is true and very well-written, with great details of those things which happened and of her emotional struggles. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 23, 2021 )
- 4.0 out of 5 stars from Margaret Ransom -- Terrific Memoir : An amazing first book. I can't say I loved this book simply because no one should ever have to go through the childhood trauma Sherry did. Written with deep emotion, it's the heart-wrenching story of a young girl and the toxic environment she endured growing up. Sherry's love for her siblings and even her uncaring, narcissistic parents is obvious as her life progresses and the bravery, strength and choices she makes throughout her story shows that you CAN pull yourself up and out of the darkness. A happy ending with what she was always searching for....LOVE. A great read. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 12, 2021 )

She struggled with parental abandonment and separation from her siblings, parental alcoholism, and a personal battle with bulimia. Fortunately, Sherry had the strength and resilience to not only survive all of these misfortunes, but to triumph over them. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Deborah Bouton -- An excellent blend of sorrow and hope : O'Neill's book was an honest and heart wrenching description of a childhood that would have crushed the souls of most. Although much of the story was incredibly sad, I finished the book with a sense of optimism and hope. I found myself eagerly waiting for the conclusion in order to satisfy my questions about all the family members, and so especially appreciated the Afterward. I will enthusiastically recommend this book to my friends. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 30, 2021 )
