  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Scott Abbott -- Family Secrets, Personal Accountability : I read this book while waiting for our Vet to deal with an emergency with our dog. Tense because of the emergency, I opened the book and was invited into a tense family story. The dog turned out to be ok. The family turned out to be heroic, at least as I see them. Stephen Trimble tells a hell of a good story, sparing no one, least of all himself. Readers find themselves complicit as well, and this acknowledgement leads me to think and rethink my own life. That's exactly why I read and why I'm thankful for this book. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 1, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Uncle Dan -- You never know another family's struggle : Stephen Trimble is generous with his parents as they dealt with a terribly difficult and heart-rending situation. He's harder on himself than perhaps he needs to be, but as he assesses his responsibility (and ours) toward his brother, he outlines a vision for care of the chronically mentally ill that could be a blueprint for appropriate care. There's no way to heal that family's hurt, but there are ways to give those who need it a chance to live with hope. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 20, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- An extraordinary work : A personal journey to compassion through guilt and loss. And a scathing commentary on the mental health industry as it was and still largely is. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 22, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Jane F. Gerhard -- Loving MIke : The Mike File by Stephen Trimble is a gem of a memoir. Mike, his older brother by a different father, is different, unruly, frustrated, possibly harmful. In the 1960s, these kinds of people were sent away and managed by prison-like institutions, and in the 70s, deinstitutionalized and left to themselves to sink or swim. Mike did both. But this story isn't just Mike's. It is Steve's too. Trimble does an unflinching self-assessment of his thoughts, feelings and actions about his brother. These are not static insights. Young Steve understands loyalty to his parents as primary. By middle age, the author has the strength to place his empathy and imagination on Mike, his life, his struggles, his very understandable feelings of having been cheated out of a better life. The memoir brims with regret and compassion for everyone involved. A masterful telling of a difficult story. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 1, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Cats Claw -- A little book with a big story : This book is very emotional. Felt every bit of pain Mike had to endure like any other 14 year old who doesn't fit in well, has no real friends, his parents made that big mistake allowing the state to take control of his life. He seemed like a very intelligent young man by reading his letters. It is so sad that his condition escalated to be labeled mentally retarded, he obviously was not retarded. It makes me angry and scared I was just as lost as he was at 14 years old. Many intelligent people have been misrepresented the same way Mike was, so sad that these people had to suffer the way Mike did. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 15, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from EBrew -- A careful, generous memoir : In a story that encompasses a lifetime of grief, disconnection, and innumerable shortcomings in mental health systems and support, Trimble creates a portrait of his family that is understanding, critical, and ultimately freeing. The care and containment of his research is a remarkable foil against the boundless, generous imagination with which the book ends. Both the reality and the could-have-been are vital elements. It's brave work. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 29, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Dorothee E. Kocks -- Full of heart and meaning (and fits in a stocking) : This is a small book in a literal sense -- such a sweet shape and size -- even while it has such a profound impact. Stephen Trimble looks at the story he's been (not) telling himself about his brother for years. This kind of honesty is hard-won. Our families are complicated, and Trimble is the best possible guide to what a better world would look like for families coping with mental illness. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 12, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from KSK -- This is for all of us who struggle in darkness… : I haven’t cried so much over a book in a very long time. This is a must read for every teacher who has ever had “that kid” in the classroom, for every police officer or sheriff who has had one of those late night calls for “that guy or gal” whom they have no option for but jail, for that mother, daughter, brother, father, wife, sister, spouse who tries desperately to get “help” but slams into continual walls of rejection and red tape and soul-sucking voids of true helplessness in a system that breeds helplessness. This. Book. Is. For. All of us. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 2, 2021 )
